Other Classes:

"Sculpting the Horse"

A Super Bowl Weekend  Workshop

Taught by Cinthia Joyce

Sat. & Sun. February 2nd and 3rd, 2008

10am to 4pm

Location:  The Alvin Miles Art School & Gallery, 31248 Palos Verdes Drive West,

Rancho Palos Verdes, CA  90275

You'll learn some equine anatomy as well as how to express emotion and spirit through gesture, form, and dynamic composition.  Using photographs as reference we will use wire armatures (which we will make ourselves) and oil based modeling clay (plasticine) in this fun and exciting workshop. Students can either focus on doing a head or an entire horse. (Plasticine is the clay professional sculptors use to create sculptures for bronzes.) It has the advantage of never drying out, so you can continue to work on details even after the workshop is over. It is not to be fired like wet clay. A mold would be created and a bronze sculpture could be cast from it if the student wishes to take it to a foundry for that process. Otherwise you can just enjoy it as it is.

It is amazing how many techniques you can learn using this type of clay, and it has the advantage of being able to use an armature to create all the legs of the horse and stay stable and thin without cracking.

Although Cinthia will bring plenty of reference materials which you may borrow while in the workshop, and you are also encouraged to bring your own photographs, magazine clippings and books. (Remember to check out the library’s children’s section on horses).

Students will have the opportunity to hear about  the bronzing process, and Cinthia will bring visuals, molds, wax, tools, etc. for you to look at and answer any questions about the business of art.

Informational handouts will be provided including resources and information about foundries, care of bronzes, suppliers of tools, etc.

Cinthia Joyce has won numerous prizes in nationally juried exhibitions for her sculptural work, and is the sculptor of the "Pacific Gray Whale" monument in front of the Point Vicente Interpretive Center on the cliffs of Palos Verdes located

less than a mile from the Alvin MIles Gallery space where this workshop will be held. She is proficient in both figurative and animal sculpture and is celebrated for her enthusiastic and encouraging teaching style.

We may visit some local horses during the course of this class, so bring a lunch with you and we may eat at the stables nearby.  Also please wear comfortable shoes suitable for standing on a cement floor while sculpting, and warm enough jackets to visit the stables.

•Workshops are very small and enrollment is on a first come, first served basis. A waiting list will be established if a workshop is filled.

•Price of this Workshop is $225. Supply list will be sent upon receipt of registration form. Plasticine clay, tools and armature materials will be available to purchase in class if you like.
