Artist's Statement for Abstract Body of Work

The human figure is fascinating to me as a means of expressing beauty, form and emotion. In my contemporary abstract sculptural work I am able to find endless source of inspiration in the human body. Realistically speaking, the number of poses a human can make are limited. I want to go beyond that limitation. Using the model as reference, in the twists of the pose and the relaxed curves of the body, I emphasize gracefulness and harmony. I often eliminate the non-essential complications of the form. I reduce the figure to it's lowest common denominator, sometimes even eliminating a foot or leg if it works better in my composition. To exaggerate the forms, elongate, add, distort, or eliminate shapes freely. I create curves or geometric shapes at the merest suggestion from the figure. Eventually the work expresses my own unique vision, stemming from my imagination and emotions.

I sculpt in wet clay or plasticine, then have my work cast in bronze, a very permanent medium. I follow the flowing forms in effortless motions, like I am sailing through the clay with my tools and hands. I find the process of abstract sculpture very relaxing, peaceful and freeing spiritually. I spend a lot of time in the finishing process, refining surface details, and concentrating on purity of line. In the finished work, I try to expose the awesome beauty of the human being in an entirely new way. In a world of endless details and clutter, I offer a thing of simplicity and tranquility.
